The Katyn massacre - the 1940 mass murder...
we must turn these dramatic pages over to the historians. They should not be used in today’s political battles or damage the image of either nation. One of the ways this could be achieved is for historians to work together. Joint publications are making a significant contribution to the process. Last year a joint publication entitled The 1938 Munich Agreement: Past and Present was put out by the World History Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the permanent representative of the Polish Academy of Sciences at the Russian Academy of Sciences. Another book was sponsored by Moscow’s State Institute of Foreign Relations, The 1939 International Crisis: Perspective of Russian and Polish Historians, which includes articles by Russian and Polish historians. It is wonderful that both books offer different points of views. The debate in these books is not limited to Russian and Polish authors; Russian historians debate amongst themselves.
