historians maintain that Hitler would have invaded Poland regardless of whether the pact was signed in 1939 and that Poland could not have been saved. Hitler had decided to invade the country in the spring of 1939. The invasion was to commence on August 26-September 1, 1939 and Hitler would not have backed down regardless of Moscow’s reaction. On the other hand, many authors rightly call the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact immoral.Recent research shows the politics of 1939-1941 to be a tangled web of conflicting aims and diverse motivations.
History cannot be reduced to political slogans, as many politicians, public activists and media outlets are trying to do today.
I can see only one way to save the historical debate from the simplifications of politicians. History should be left to historians. The Katyn massacre is no exception. It is up to Russian and Polish historians to research what happened, cast aside speculation and make the facts public. This
